Classic Chicken Tikka Masala: An Indian Restaurant Favorite at Home
Chicken Tikka Masala is one of those dishes that seems intimidating to make at home, but with this simple recipe, you'll achieve restaurant-quality results without leaving your kitchen. Rich, creamy, and packed with aromatic spices, this dish pairs perfectly with basmati rice or warm naan bread.
Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless chicken breast, cut into cubes
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 can coconut milk
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken : In a bowl, combine the chicken cubes with yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, turmeric, and cumin. Mix well and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or overnight for better flavor).
- Grill or Bake the Chicken : Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the marinated chicken on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through, until cooked through. Alternatively, grill the chicken for added char.
- Prepare the Sauce : Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Stir in the pureed tomatoes and tomato paste. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- Simmer the Dish : Pour in the coconut milk and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Add the grilled chicken to the sauce and let it cook for another 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish and Serve : Sprinkle fresh cilantro over the top and serve hot with steamed rice or naan bread.
Tips
- Adjust the spice level by adding red chili powder if you prefer a spicier dish.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated easily.
